Review of Talk Sweetly to Me by Courtney Milan

This novella is the seventh book in The Brothers Sinister Series and I will say that it is just as amazing as the previous six.  Courtney's style of writing is pure enjoyment.  In this book she tackles two major sterotypes of the time period.

The first one is that women are just as intelligent as men and the prevailing assumption that women should be wives and mothers and stay in their place.  Rose is a shopkeepers daughter who happens to be a mathamatics genius and loves Astronomy.  She is shy and prefers to remain unnoticed.

The other is that is a black women in a white man's world.  She has grown up knowing that she has a certain place in the world and that to step out of it would only cause her and her family scandal and heartbreak.

And then she meets Stephen Shaughnessy, a white irishman who writes a scandalous advice column. (You met Stephen in The Suffragette Scandal).  He is a rake who is very handsome and funny.   He lives two doors down from her sister who she is staying with .

Stephen is fascinated by Rose.  He is a devil may care kinda guy who has seduced many women, but he has never gone out of his way for any of them.  Rose is different, she is beautiful, intelligent, demure and he cannot seem to stop thinking about her.  He feels differently about her, when he first starts to flirt with her he is not thinking about seducing her, he just wants to be with her however he can.

Rose knows that she has to discourage him because nothing good can come out of a relationship between them.  She cannot let him seduce her even though she wants him to.
Stephen talks her employer into letting him take mathematical lessons from her just so he can be in her company.  Rose is wary of this but agrees.  The more time they spend together the more Stephen realizes he is in love with her.  Rose loves him too but she sees the world for what it really is and knows that she cannot have him for herself.

The idea of them getting married and having children scares her and she thinks that Stephen is being naive about the consequences.

I won't spoil the rest of the story for you, but you have to read this book.  As usual Courtney has written a beautiful book that keeps you turning the pages until the end. This is the first historical romance that I have read that tackles the issue of romance between black and white races and I applaud Courtney for wirting it.  Today an inter-racial romance is no big deal, but in 1882 this wa a big, big deal.

If you have not read any of Courtney books, do so right away.  You won't be sorry!!!

How the Scoundrel Seduces by Sabrina Jeffries

I have read all of Sabrina's books.  This is the third book in the Duke's Men series.  It seems like I was waiting forever for this book. I really enjoyed this book.  Zoe hires Manton Investigations to find a women who has the secret to her origins.  Tristan reluctantly takes the case because he has his own reasons for accepting this assignment.

This story has romance, mystery, suspense, great dialouge, and some great secondary stories that we can only hope will turn into other books in this series.

Sabrina really lets us see how Tristan and Zoe were so much alike and also very different.  This book showed the way that certain groups of people were treated during this period because of the circumstances of their birth and how they lived their lives.  The social stigma that Tristan had to deal with and the way Zoe came to realize that it is not where you can came from but who you are.

I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next one!

Image result for image of Finding Miss Mcfarland

The Wallflower series has been very entertaining and I have enjoyed all three books.  Finding Miss McFarland is the thrid book in the series.  Delaney McFarland is a red head with all that goes along with her hair color.  She is stubborn, outspoken and does what she thinks is right even though she knows some of the things she does  would send her father into a apolexy.  She is compassionate and helps those less fortunate.

She has to marry and after the debacle at her debut she knows her only option is a Marriage of Convieence.  Her large dowry will help her find a husband who wants her for her money only.

The hero Griffin is a rake who can't seem to stop thinking about her since he met her at her debut and she got sick all over his shoes.  Months later she is back in London and she is determined to avoid him.   They meet by accident in the park and later share a kiss.  He deciides that he wants her for himself and will do anything to have her.

Vivienne's prose is very well written, the back and forth between Delaney and Griffin is witty and engaging.  Her characters have depth, are intelligent, and very likable.  I enjoy her writing and very much look forward to her next book.  I would recommend this book to a friend.

ARC Of Not Quite A Wife by Mary Jo Putney

Mary Jo Putney writes intensely touching love stories that inspire her readers to feel emotionally attached to her story and her characters. James and Laurel married young, love at first sight and then tragedy seperates them.  Years later he shows up beaten and sick at her infirmary and in his delirium he thinks she has come back and they make love.  Laurel could never resist him.  When his fever breaks and he wakes up he doesn't remember what happened.  They are polite to each other and avoid talking about their marriage,  When he recovers he thanks her for her care, they also realize that the years apart have changed them both.  He loves her and wants her back but she has made a new life for herself and he wants her to be happy, so he leaves.

Weeks later she realizes she is pregnant and contacts him to let him know.  They decide to try and reconcile for the sake of the child.  She is going to split her time between her home and philanthropic endeavors and London with James.  I will not give away anymore of the story, you have to read this book!

The reason I like Mary Jo's writing is that her characters are intelligent, mature and their is no unnecssary DRAMA that can ruin a good book. Her accuracy for detail is amazing and her grasp of the nuances of the period are wonderful and informative.  She writes with lovely emotion, great characters and her secondary stories are marvelous.  This one is a keeper.

Review of Devil to Pay by Renee Bernard

WOW!!!  First let me say that I have not read a Contemporary romance novel in 30 years, and I have never read a Paranormal one.
That being said I loved this book.  It was romantic and very witty.  Welcome to H.E. LLc, also known as HELL or HADES located in an invisible high rise in downtown San Francisco.

Jayne Hamilton is a young PR rep trying to work her way up the corporate ladder.  When she is passed over for another promotion she decides to leave work early and take a walk.  She finds herself  in front of a 70 story black and glass building that she has never seen before.  She enters the building and her life will never be the same.  Why?  She meets her soul mate who happens to be the Archangel Lucifer, also known as Satan.

Combine instant attraction between the two characters, a sweet love story with tons of laughs, rules, free will, and other demons, and Archangels and you have a book that you will read in one night.

What is different about this book, there are no bad guys coming in between the characters.  Also this is the first romance I have read without sex scenes and you didn't need them to tell the story.

For being the Devil, Luke is sweet and kind and very romantic.  His cast of demons and fellow Archangels are hysterically funny and I laughed my way thru this book.  With lines like this how can you not?

"Is there a remote infinitesimal chance I just tried to pitch PR services to Lucifer,  Prince of Darkness and Overseer of Hell?

And rules that state "Angels Rules 101"  "They cannot interfere or change the course of human's path without Sanction from Upper Management"  (Heaven).

I enjoyed this book very much and cannot not wait for the next one in The Eternity Gambit series.

For me to read a romance that is not Historical is truly mind blowing to me.  I never thought I could enjoy a book that takes place in the present, because I read Historical Romance to escape this world, but Renee has converted me.  She is truly an amazing writer and want to thank her for writing a book that combines everything we all love in Romance.

Do Not Miss This Book!!!!!!
