Review of What A Gentleman Wants by Caroline Linden

Caroline is one of a few select authors who when she releases an older book with a new cover, I am all over it.  This particular story was the first book I read by Caroline when it was released in September of 2006, and she became one of my favorite authors and all her books are keepers.  I love the way she writes, her characters are amazingly deep and captivating.  The interactions between Marcus and Hannah will make you smile, laugh and I admit it, tear up a little.  The secondary characters are also marvelous and add so much to the story and since this is the first book in the Reece Family you don't have to wait for the next two books, they are already released and available are your favorite book seller!!!

This story is about a feisty, strong willed Vicar's widow with a little girl who is cruelly tricked by a gentleman who is recovering in her cottage from a carriage accident.  He marries her and takes her to London and drops her off at his house, or so she believes.  The next thing she knows is that a very rude Duke is knocking on her door and he looks almost exactly like her husband who has disappeared.  I do not do spoilers in my reviews but you have to know that the Marcus, the Duke is not as cold as he seems and he doesn't realize how empty his life was until he met Hannah.  This is a beautiful, captivating love story that will leave sighing with satisfaction.  Do not miss this book or any others that Caroline writes,  you won't regret it.

ARC Review of Enraptured by Candace Camp

Another amazing story by Candace.  Lots of plot twists, a mysterious treasure,  two wonderful  characters and a captivating love story.   Coll Munro is a highlander who is an estate manager for his brother in law and sister Meg who are the hero and heroine of the second book in this series, Pleasured.  Coll is watching over the estate when Violet Thornhill shows up to and the trouble begins.  Violet is a bluestocking who is stubborn, exasperating and a pain in the arse!!  They clash from the very beginning until their passionate fighting into another kind of passion.  Violet is content to have Coll as a lover, but Coll has integrity and honor and wants to marry her.  Add in a treasure hunt and mysterious villains and you get a book that you won't want to  put down.  I have been reading Candace's books for years and have always enjoyed them very much.  Do not miss this one....it is a Treasure!!!

Virtual Book Tour for Dukes Prefer Blondes by Lorretta Chase

Lady Clara, the fan-favorite character from Loretta Chase’s New York Times and USA Today bestselling Dressmakers series, finally gets her own happily ever after!

Convenient marriages are rarely so…exciting. Can society’s most adored heiress and London’s most difficult bachelor fall victim to their own unruly desires?

Biweekly marriage proposals from men who can’t see beyond her (admittedly breathtaking) looks are starting to get on Lady Clara Fairfax’s nerves. Desperate to be something more than ornamental, she escapes to her favorite charity. When a child goes missing, she turns to Oliver Radford—a handsome, brilliant, excessively conceited barrister.

Having unexpectedly found himself in line to inherit a dukedom, Radford needs a bride who can navigate the Society he’s never been part of. If he can find one without having to set foot in a ballroom, so much the better. Clara—blonde, blue-eyed, and he must admit, not entirely bereft of brains—will do. As long as he can woo her, wed her—and not, like every other sapskull in London, lose his head over her…

EXCERPT
At the head of Whitehall-street is the noted point of Charing cross; and immediately above it lately opened Trafalgar square, where is to be erected a splendid naval monument; and the new national gallery of the fine arts, now in building, is on the north side of the square.

—Calvin Colton, Four Years in Great Britain, 1831–35 Environs of Covent Garden, London Wednesday 19 August 1835

“Stop it!” the girl cried. “Get off! I won’t go!”

Lady Clara Fairfax, about to alight from her cabriolet, couldn’t hear what the boy said, but she heard him laugh and saw him grab Bridget Coppy’s arm and try to drag her away from the building she was about to enter. It housed the Milliners’ Society for the Education of Indigent Females.

The horse safe in her tiger’s keeping, her ladyship snatched up her whip, picked up her skirts, and ran toward the pair. She struck the boy’s arm with the whip’s butt end. He let out a high-pitched oath.

He was a mean-looking boy, red-haired, with a square, spotty face. He wore the cheap, showy coat she’d learned to associate with the strutting ne’er-do-wells who infested the neighborhood.

“Get away from her, or you’ll get more of the same,” Clara said. “Leave this place. You’ve no business here. Be gone before I send for a constable.”

The boy eyed her in an insolent manner. The effect was spoiled, however, by his having to stretch his head back and cast his beady-eyed gaze upward a distance, for Clara was not petite and he was not tall. His gaze dropped to the whip in her hand, then to the dashing cabriolet behind her—from which she didn’t doubt her maid Davis had descended, brandishing her umbrella.

With a sneer, he said what sounded like, “You better hit harder’n that, you want me to feel it.” He didn’t wait for her to hit harder, but set his hat at a very sharp angle and sauntered off.

“Are you all right?” she asked Bridget.“

Yes, your ladyship, and thank you ever so,” the girl said. “I don’t know what was in his mind to come here. He oughter know his sort ain’t welcome here.”

The Milliners’ Society for the Education of Indigent Females housed and educated girls determined, against prodigious odds, to be respectable.

In the ordinary way of things, girls aiming to learn a trade became apprentices. But London’s dressmakers could pick and choose their apprentices, and the Milliners’ Society girls were outcasts or rejects for one reason or another: The majority were too old to be apprenticed and/or they were “fallen” or carried some other stigma.

The Society picked them up from the gutter—if they were willing to be removed from that location—and did everything possible to make them fit for employment. With practice, diligence, and good eyesight, most girls would learn to sew straight, tiny stitches at great speed, and they could be placed as seamstresses. Some, though, had the potential to rise higher—for instance, to embroider fine muslins, silks, linens, wools, and these materials’ numerous combinations. Perhaps one or two might even possess the wherewithal to rise to become successful milliners or dressmakers.

Bridget was fifteen years old. An unsuccessful flower seller, she had appeared on the Society’s doorstep after being assaulted and robbed who knew how many times, thanks to her refusing assorted pimps’ protection. She had been completely illiterate. She had turned out to be one of the most diligent students and an especially gifted embroiderer. In the display cases, her work always stood out.

Outside the building, so, unfortunately, did her looks.

“I can tell you what was in his mind,” Clara said. “He wasn’t thinking much beyond the fact of your being pretty and what males think when they see pretty girls.”

Lady Clara Fairfax ought to know. Twenty-two years old as of yesterday, she was the most beautiful and sought-after girl in London, and according to some, in all of England.

“Yes, your ladyship, and thank you ever so,” the girl said. “I don’t know what was in his mind to come here. He oughter know his sort ain’t welcome here.

GUEST POST

Christmas with the Barnes Family
In my home, the Christmas preparations begin on the first Sunday of Advent, which happened to be November 25th this year. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this custom, Advent is marked by the last four Sundays leading up to Christmas and has, for me, always consisted of lighting an advent wreath.
When I was little, my mom would give me a small present on each of these Sundays, and I now do the same for my children (in addition to the more common advent calendar available in stores). The first Sunday in Advent is oftentimes the day when we put up the Christmas decorations as well. I have a great collection of ‘Nisser’ that gets distributed throughout the house in various shapes and sizes. They are small mythical creatures from Scandinavian folklore and are generally associated with Christmas since this is when they’re supposed to be most active, causing mischief around the house while also bringing gifts. Some people will even put porridge up in the attic for them in a similar way that Americans leave milk and cookies for Santa.

Virtual Tour for The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean

Lady Sophie’s Society Splash
When Sophie, the least interesting of the Talbot sisters, lands her philandering brother-in-law backside-first in a goldfish pond in front of all society, she becomes the target of very public aristocratic scorn. Her only choice is to flee London, vowing to start a new life far from the aristocracy. Unfortunately, the carriage in which she stows away isn’t saving her from ruin . . . it’s filled with it.

Rogue’s Reign of Ravishment!
Kingscote, “King,” the Marquess of Eversley, has never met a woman he couldn’t charm, resulting in a reputation far worse than the truth, a general sense that he’s more pretty face than proper gentleman, and an irate summons home to the Scottish border. When King discovers stowaway Sophie, however, the journey becomes anything but boring.

War? or More?

He thinks she’s trying to trick him into marriage. She wouldn’t have him if he were the last man on earth. But carriages bring close quarters, dark secrets, and unbearable temptation, making opposites altogether too attractive . . .

Intro from Sarah MacLean
Being shot on the Great North Road isn't exactly a thing people expect to happen, and Lady Sophie Talbot finds herself in the rooms above The Warbling Wren pub, under the welcome care of a rather mad doctor and the watchful eye of the rather infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) Kingscote, Marquess of Eversley. There are worse things, she supposes. Or are there? Not for King.)

“If you want a bath, you’ll have to accept my help,” he said.

She pursed her lips at that, her gaze settling longingly on the steaming bath. “You mustn’t look.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it.” It might have been the most obvious lie he’d ever told.

Somehow, she believed it, nodding and throwing back the coverlet to step out of the bed. She came to her feet, the top of her head at his chin, and he resisted the urge to help her across the room. “How do you feel?” he asked, hearing the gravel in his words. He cleared his throat.

“As though I’ve been shot, I’d imagine.”

He raised a brow. “Clever. There's food when you’ve bathed." The words summoned a low growl from her, and her hands flew to her stomach. Her cheeks turned red, and he smiled. “I take it you are hungry.”

“It seems so,” she said.

“Food after the bath. And then sleep.”

She met his gaze. “You’re very domineering.”

“It’s a particular talent.”

“What with you being called King.”

“Name is destiny.”

She moved past him to the high copper bathtub. He resumed his place against the wall, arms crossed, watching her carefully as she reached down, her long fingers trailing in the hot water as she sighed her anticipation. The sound was like gunfire in the room—pure, unadulterated pleasure. It was delicious.

King stiffened. He was not interested in the lady’s pleasure.
If only someone would tell his body that.
