Review of The Rogues Wager by Christi Caldwell

Another wonderful book by Christi Caldwell.  This is the first book in the new Sinful Brides Series.  I really enjoyed this one especially because of the two main characters.

Helena Banbury is the bastard daughter of a Duke.  She lives in a gaming hell in St. Giles with her brother Ryker, who owns the hell and is also the Duke's illegitimate son.  She keeps the books for the club.  Helena is prohibited from entering the public areas of the club, her brother is just trying to protect her from the dangers that lurk in and outside the club.  They both were abused physically by the drunkard that their mother wound up with after the Duke.  Helena bears the scars physically and mentally.  Lately she has become restless and dissatisfied with her life.  Her life is about to take a turn that she could never have dreamt.

Lord Robert Dennington is a confirmed rake.  He has enjoyed the privileged life of the heir to a Dukedom. He had his heart broken at a young age and is determined to stay single until it is absolutely necessary. After all he will be a Duke one day.  Answering a summons from his father the Duke of Somerset, he arrives and finds out that the rumours of the Duke's impending death were just a way for his father to get his attention. Robert finds out that his inheritance is on very shaky ground.  His grandfather made some bad investments and the Dukedom is virtually broke.  The Duke suggests that it might be time for Robert to find a wife, preferably an Heiress.  Shocked by his father's revelations Robert gets stinking drunk and winds up in a gambling hell in St. Giles.  After hours of drinking he attempts to find his way home and only gets as far as the personal living quarters of the club owner.

Of course this is where and when Helena and Robert first meet.  He is really, really drunk and cannot stay on his own two feet and she is in her nightgown holding a knife and trying to help him up and out of the club before her brother finds Robert where he should not be.  This starts a relationship that will lead them both on a journey filled with danger, excitement , laughter and hopefully love.  Both Helena and Robert are flawed characters that will be tested to the limit of their heart and soul.

Christi writes a compelling heart felt story.  It is emotionally rewarding and a joy to experience the journey that she takes you on in her books.  I am a true fan of Christi's books and I guarantee that you will adore her books just as much as I do.  She has a way of pulling you in to the story and cheering on her characters.

Review of a Date at the Altar by Cathy Maxwell

Finally!!!!  The Duke of Baynton, Gavin Whitridge gets his story.  Gavin is a Gentleman who has always done what was required of him as a Duke.  He uses his position to keep his country safe and prosperous. Guiding and influencing where he must.  He has never kept a mistress nor ever been the subject of any unsavory gossip.  He is everything that a Duke of the Realm should be.  He has never stepped out of the boundaries that were drilled into him by his father.  If you have read the first two books in this series, you know that both times he courted a lady she has fallen in love with someone else, as a Gentleman he has stepped back and let the ladies marry their true loves.

Mrs. Sarah Pettijohn is an actress, a playwright, the illegitimate daughter of Lord Twyndale, a widow and a survivor of physical and sexual abuse by her late husband.  Sarah is a fighter who is determined to succeed, she will have one of her plays performed at a theater in London.  She is also stubborn to the point driving The Duke of Baynton stark raving mad!!!

It begins when Gavin has been talked into attending an event at a theater where the famous Siren is to perform.  He is brought to his feet in shock when he recognizes that Mrs. Sarah Pettijohn is the Siren.  He has had dealings with her and the past and never thought to have to see her ever again.  His brother married her niece.  Gavin has never been a slave to lust, but now he wants Sarah as his mistress and is in the position to help her if she will agree to Carte Blanche.

Sarah has vowed never to become like her mother, going from man to man as she ages and then dies broke and alone. But the Duke is offering something she might not be able to refuse.  Deep inside Sarah is terrified of intimacy and simply is not any good at sex, or so her husband had told her. She doesn't know if she can submit to Gavin.  For his part Gavin is tired of always doing the right thing.  He realizes that he has never made any decisions to make himself happy.  He has never known anyone like Sarah and is determined to have her.  Add his mother pushing him to court a young lady of her chose.

This is a story that will touch you down to your soul.  Sarah and Gavin are amazing characters that will tug at your heartstrings and you will cheer for them to get their HAE.  Cathy writes a story that you will not be able to put down.  I smiled alot at the witty dialogue between Sarah and Gavin and I cried as they both opened up and told each other their secrets.  This is an extraordinary love story that you will want to read over and over again.  All I can say about this book is you must read it!!  This book can be read as a stand alone.  I recommend if you have not read the first two in the!!!

Review of While The Duke Was Sleeping by Sophie Jordan

This is the story of a shop girl who is love with a Duke.  The Duke doesn't even know she is alive.  He frequents the flower shop she works in to send flowers to his lovers, his many lovers.  Poppy Fairchurch is a poor country girl who has come to the big city with her younger sister after her father has passed away.  She works in the flower shop and barely gets by, but she promised her father that she would look after her younger sister.  Her only enjoyment in life is her daydream that the Duke will notice her and sweep her away to a new life where they live happily ever after.

Then one day the unthinkable happened, he was almost hit by a coach and four while brawling with another Gentleman in front of the flower shop.  Poppy rushes out to the Duke's aid and saves him from getting run over and then she gets rescues by the other Gentleman before she gets run over by the same coach.

In the confusion of helping get the Duke to his home, Poppy is mistaken for the Duke's Fiancee.   The man that saved Poppy turns out to be the Duke's bastard half brother.  Straun MacKenzie does not like the Duke but he is intrigued by Poppy.  When the Duke's family finds out that Poppy is his betrothed they are so excited that they invite Poppy and her sister to stay with them until the Duke wakes up from the coma he is in.

Poppy is stuck living the lie that she is betrothed to the Duke until he wakes up and now she has to deal with Straun MacKenzie who she says she wants nothing to do with, or is she kidding herself?  There is a palatable attraction between Struan and Poppy.  What will happen when the Duke wakes up and tells everyone he isn't betrothed to Poppy?  Will Poppy give in to Struan's seduction?  She is confused but tempted.

I loved this story.  Poppy and Struan are both struggling with their feelings for each other and you can feel the emotions as you read.  I have been waiting for Struan's story and it was worth the wait.  Sophie has a way with words that very few writers can match.  Her plots are splendid and her characters are brilliant.  I own every Historical Romance she has written and I whole heartily recommend her books.

Review of Lady Lost by Jane Goodger

A beautiful story by Jane Goodger.  This is the third book in The Lost Heiresses Series.

Marcus Dunford is a nobleman who is hiding away from Society and everything to do with it.  He has been betrayed by his unfaithful dead wife and made a fool of in front of his friends and family.  He decides to go to a dilapidated estate that he owns and stay there and talk to no one.  He has just two servants and they both leave before it gets dark because the locals say it is haunted.

Lilian Martin is a young lady on the run. Her brother-in-law is a man who preys on young woman and her sister is only 15 when they marry.  Lilian's mother has passed away and she has to live with her sister and spends her days and nights avoiding and hiding from brother in law the Duke.

Then one day the Duke is discovered shot to death in his bed and Lilian is the first to find him, she picks up the gun off the floor and that is how she is discovered.  She runs knowing that she will be blamed and hung posthaste.

Marcus discovers Lilian soaking wet and unconscious on a muddy road and takes her into his coach and even though he does not want to, he takes her to his home.  His housekeeper cleans her up and he waits for her to wake up to tell her that she has to leave immediately.  Lilian is also not the only surprise that Marcus has to deal with,

This is a remarkable tale of love, betrayal, redemption and mystery.  I laughed and I cried.  Jane is a favorite author of mine.  Her stories are always a treat to read and her characters are enjoyable and rise off the pages to find a way into your heart.
